He just didnt realize it would take something that went so wrong for Briny Baird. Tied for the lead in the McGladrey Classic, Kirk was on the other side of the 18th fairway trying to envision an approach that would cover the flag and set up a birdie chance for the win. Those plans changed when Baird, with the ball below his feet in a fairway bunker, topped a 4-iron and watched his ball roll 90 yards and into a hazard. Kirk played for par, closed with a 4-under 66 for a one-shot victory, and became the first player from Sea Island to win the McGladrey Classic -- even if the 28-year-old moved to Atlanta a few months ago after six years in this tiny slice of paradise. He received the trophy from tournament host Davis Love III, his hero when he first took the game seriously. "To come here to Sea Island, which is a place that I love and cherish so much, and Daviss tournament, it just an unbelievable thing," Kirk said. "Davis was kind of my guy when I was 12 and 13, really starting to play golf. He was my favourite player, and hes turned from being my idol to sort of a mentor and good friend. So Im a very lucky person to be in that situation, and to win his tournament really means a lot to me." The victory sends Kirk to the Masters for the first time, a tournament that means even more. His joy was tempered slightly by the way the tournament finished. "It hurt to do what I did on the last hole," Baird said. Baird is now 0-for-365 in his PGA Tour career, and it looked for the longest time that he finally would win. Baird went from a two-shot deficit to a one-shot lead in two holes on the back nine, and he was on the verge of seizing control on the par-5 15th. Baird hit his approach to 40 feet for a chance at eagle. Kirk was between clubs and pulled his hybrid into the water left of the green, and then he slammed his wedge into the turf when he chipped weakly, leaving him a long putt for par. It looked as if Baird would lead by two shots, maybe three, with three holes to play. Instead, he ran his eagle putt 4 feet by the cup and three-putted for par, and Kirk holed his 20-foot par putt to stay only one shot behind. "That kept me in it," Kirk said. He caught Baird with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole, setting up one last surprise on a back nine filled with them. Tim Clark closed with a 62 and was on the practice range, holding out slim hope for a playoff if Kirk and Baird made bogey on the 18th. Only one of them faltered, and it was shocking. Baird had a tough lie in the sand, and he felt his left foot slip. Even so, he felt he should have been able to pull off the shot. It wasnt even close. Baird struggled with his swing most of the day, and he told his caddie he didnt feel comfortable with it going down the 18th. "You mix that with nerves, and its a recipe for disaster," Baird said. Kirk finished at 14-under 266, and his last tournament of 2013 came with plenty of perks -- the biggest a trip to Augusta National, which he only has played when Georgia alumni used to invited the golf team over once a year. He also gets into the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua to start 2014. And his parents get a new photo for their mantle. The one they have is from a decade ago, when Kirk finished his sophomore year in high school and played in the Canon Cup north of Chicago. It was the first time he met Love, and his parents still have a photo of their son with sideburns and braces. "Its a pretty funny picture now," Kirk said. Now he can give them a photo of Kirk and Love posing with the trophy on the 18th green of the Seaside course at Sea Island, where Kirk had lived for the last six years until moving back to Atlanta because his wife is due next month with their second child. He still has his home at Sea Island, and it felt like the home with a large gallery waiting for him around the 18th green. It was the first time Kirk could recall such a large gallery cheering for him. If there was any consolation for Baird, it was money, of all things. The 41-year-old from Miami has said for years that he would rather have a season full of strong finishes that gets him into the Tour Championship than one win and nothing else. Even this week, he said tournament golf is as much about money than trophies. He earned $484,000 for his tie for second, and the 25-foot bogey putt was worth $220,000. Baird was playing this year on a major medical extension from having surgery on both shoulders in 2012, and the money he earned Sunday was enough for him to keep his card for the rest of the season. It was a small consolation. "Its not all about winning," Baird said Sunday. "Ive said that, but this hurts. This really does. This is very disappointing." Divots: This was the sixth time Baird has been runner-up. He has gone the longest without winning among players who have their PGA Tour cards. ... When former Boise State head coach Chris Petersen signed a five-year deal with Washington last Friday, it meant a new beginning for the Huskies. Ozzie Smith . But more than that, Petersens departure also means the end of an era in college football. During his eight-year run on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium, nobody won more games than Petersen. His 92-12 record is unmatched from 2006 to 2013. He led the Broncos to five 12-win seasons, and took home five conference titles. Under Petersens tutelage, Boise State didnt just win; they went from mid-major, to BCS buster, to national power. Petersen announced Boise States arrival at the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. In a game that included both a statue of liberty play, and a hook and ladder, and ended with a marriage proposal, BSU stunned Oklahoma 43-42 in overtime to cap an undefeated season. The Broncos became just the second non-AQ school to win a BCS bowl, and finished No. 5 in the AP Top 25. In 2009 “Coach P” did it again, leading Boise State to the Fiesta bowl, beating TCU to finish undefeated. Petersen also led Boise State to victories over national powers like Oregon, Virginia Tech, and Georgia. He led BSU to eight-straight bowl games and led them to respect from the college football elite. In the season following their 2010 Fiesta Bowl win, Boise State debuted at No. 3 in the AP Top 25, the highest pre-season ranking for a non-AQ school in the BCS era. That year the Broncos would peak at No. 2 and were a missed overtime field goal away from a possible national championship berth. During the Petersen era, Boise State moved from the now defunct WAC to the MWC. They helped the MWC secure a new television contract worth a reported $116 million, and guaranteed themselves three home games a year with a national television audience. All this at a school that recruits two-star athletes, plays in a tiny 37,000-seat stadium - 84th largest in the NCAA - and resides in the 120th largest media market in America. Washington wasnt the first AQ program to show interest; Petersens name was a constant in almost any discussion of head coaching vacancies. Arkansas, USC, UCLA, and Stanford all came calling at one time or another. But Petersen always stayed, content to lead his program and raise his family in isolated Boise. That changed this year. The Broncos won just eight games, the lowest win total of Petersens eight-year tenure. Rampant conference realignment left the MWC substantially weaker than it was when the BSU joined in 2011. And with the college football playoff coming, it should be harder than ever for schools from non-power conferences to crash the party. So Petersen heads to Washington, a school with a long, proud history. He heads to a school that beat him twice in his time in Idaho, and one that ranks third all-time in Rose Bowl appearances.Its fitting that the man who defined the term BCS buster moves on as the BCS as we know it gets busted up once and for all. But lost in the BCS shuffle was how great the moment was for the Spartans. The last time MSU was in the Rose Bowl, 1988, most of the current Spartans hadnt even been born yet. After Oregons DeAnthony Thomas said the Rose Bowl was “not a big deal,” it was refreshing to see MSUs players acting excited to be heading to the grand-daddy of them all. -Despite stunning numbers, Fresno States Derek Carr didnt receive an invite to the Heisman ceremony on Saturday. Bohl comes to Laramie from North Dakota State, where he guided the Bisons for the last 11 seasons. Since 2010, NDSU is 40-2 under Bohl, and is coming off back-to-back FCS championships. The former Nebraska defensive coordinator will finish the FCS playoffs with NDSU before joining the Cowboys. -Another coach to follow will be opposite Bohl this weekend when North Dakota meets Coastal Carolina in the FCS quarterfinals. Joe Moglia is in his second season as head coach of the Chanticleers. Moglia is actually a multimillionaire, the former CEO of TD Ameritrade. After stepping down in 2008, Moglia became a sort of unpaid intern with Nebraska, shadowing Bo Pelini for two years. A brief stint in the now-defunct UFL later, and Moglia was hired at Coastal Carolina. Last season the Chanticleers went 8-5. This season the team from Myrtle Beach, SC is 12-2. -Former Sooners head coach Barry Switzer drew criticism back in November when he tweeted before Oklahomas game against Iowa State, “Since everyone beats ISU at home, I want to be the first to congratulate [Bob Stoops] on tying the record of 157 wins!” Well the three-time national champion was at it again before Saturdays game against Oklahoma State tweeting, “Sooners will ‘Hang Half a Hundred Saturday! EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. Bob Gibson . - It was a moment that had Los Angeles Kings fans holding their collective breath. Drew Doughty yelped in pain after taking a slash from Ducks defenceman Francois Beauchemin to the back of the knee Monday night. He slowly skated off the ice struggling to put weight on the injured leg. "It was just a numb feeling," said Doughty, who has logged a team-high 27:14 of ice time per game in the playoffs. "It hits a little nerve and just goes numb for three minutes, four minutes and then its fine. Ive had it happen before so I wasnt scared, but its numb so its awkward to skate on." Doughty, who returned to the ice a few shifts after the slash, doesnt believe Beauchemin hit him in the sensitive spot on purpose. But that doesnt mean hell forget what happened. "Well, I always keep it in the back of my mind," Doughty said. "I know exactly who it was. Im not going to take any runs at him, but if hes coming down [the ice] Im not going to shy up on a hit." The Ducks are eager to make Doughty pay a physical price in this series, because his presence on the blue line is absolutely crucial to the Kings success, especially considering they are down two regulars (Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr) due to injury. "I know teams are going to target me," said Doughty. "Theyre going to target other guys on the team too. Its just part of the game. If anything, that makes you hungrier. It makes you want to work harder to avoid those hits and make a difference. When theyre targeting you and youre still being successful, thats the most frustrating thing for them." Anaheim is also doing its best to get Jonathan Quick off his game. Corey Perry crashed into the Los Angeles crease during the second period of Game 2, which led the soft-spoken Kings keeper to give him a shot and take a roughing penalty. "Some people think you get him off his game by doing those types of things, but you dont," said Kings forward Jarret Stoll. "If anybody knows Quickie, hes a very, very competitive, determined guy in the net and hell do anything to win and hell back up his teammates even when we dont want him to sometimes. We dont want him in the scrums, but sometimes hes in there like he was in round one [when he went after big San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton]. "Its no secret: we want to target their best players too. If their best players are the best players in the series then theyre going to win the series and were going to lose. If Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter and Marian Gaborik are the best players in the series, were probably going to win." For his part, Darryl Sutter thinks all the targeting talk is a bit much. "Every game he plays he gets extra attention, but I dont think anyone is going out of their way to hit Drew Doughty," the Kings head coach said. "Theyre a big, physical team. The reason Drew may get touched more than other guys is he plays half the game. Quite honest, we need some of our other defencemen to get touched that much." Thats just one adjustment the Kings can make. There will be others. Despite stealing the first two games of the series in Anaheim, Sutter and his players are far from content. There are certainly ways they can improve. "Hopefully lots of ways," Sutter said, "but Im not going to give you that little secret." The tight-lipped coach did admit he felt the Kings were lucky to be in such a commanding position in the series. "We had to use a short bench [in Game 1] because some guys werent up to standards. We were fortunate to win that game." One area where the Kings can be better is in dealing with the Anaheim forecheck. "Theyre quick. They read off each other really well," Stoll explained. "Theyre very aggressive. They get two guys down to the goal line very quickly on our defencemen. If were not going to support our defencemen like we should, were going to get outmanned and out-supported. The key is to out-support their forecheck in those situations. Come up with the pucks, and get it going the other way. Everybody wants to play in the offensive zone. Thats the whole battle. Thats the whole series right there." So there are issues to be addressed, but at the same time there are reasons to believe coming back on the Kings will be a very, very difficult task. The Kings were outshot by the Ducks 37-17 in Game 2, but they have done well to prevent second-chance opportunities. "Our D have done a really good job of defending," said Doughty. "We maybe havent been the best at moving the puck or as good as we usually are, but our defending has been really, really good. Were playing physical. Were boxing guys out, getting under sticks, clearing pucks and thats our job in the D zone. When were doing that, when were clearing the bodies, Quickies going to make the first save." Doughty had a four game point streak snapped on Monday and he has the same number of penalty minutes (two) as shots on net in the series so far. And yet he remains a key reason why the Kings are in such a good spot. "I thought we controlled him pretty good," said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. "I dont think he made many rushes [Monday], but hes a smart player and hes very good defensively when he has to be. Thats based on the individual. Theres not much we can do about the fact were playing against a good player. I mean, hes good and hes going to make good plays. We try and disrupt him as much as we can, but youre not going to do it all the time." Doughty believes he is "10 times the player" he was during the 2009-10 season when he racked up a career-high 59 points en route to a Norris Trophy nomination. He says he is much better in his own zone now and all-around more mature. "I feel Ive improved as a player and been a better leader for this team and Ive played a lot better. I make a difference in every game." The other major thorn in Anaheims side, other than Doughty and Quick, is Anze Kopitar. The Selke Trophy nominee is the leading scorer in the playoffs with 14 points despite being matched up consistently against other teams top players. Kopitar has registered at least one point in all nine of the Kings playoff games this spring. "When Im on the ice with Kopi Im playing completely different," said Doughty. "When I get the puck rather than maybe trying to rush it or something like that, if Kopis open Im just giving it to him no matter what and Im joining the rush. "When Kopis there you have full trust in him. He just makes things happen when he has the puck so I figure why not give it to the guy that makes things happen and try and get open for him." Despite their success, the core players on the Kings arent about to start feeling too good about themselves despite the current six game win streak. This is a veteran team just two years removed from a championship. And theyre way too smart to feel satisfied. "We know how quickly a series can change," said Doughty. "It just takes one moment sometimes. It can be a fight, just a big goal or anything like that. A series can change so quickly so you got to keep that foot on the gas pedal. We cant let them back in the series. "We have that killer instinct and we have to show that in the next game. If we let up for any second that [can be] the difference in the game, the difference between winning and losing." Only a couple weeks ago, the Kings appeared dead in the water after dropping the first three games against the Sharks. They dont want to give the Ducks a chance to author their own comeback story. "A 2-0 lead is great, but its not four," Stoll said. "Its not four wins and we know that better than anybody and we also know we havent played our best hockey to date."
